Threshold and PNY - on the edge of the digital film revolution
Threshold Digital Research Labs (TDRL), a groundbreaking global digital animation and effects production studio, has built a reputation for creating digital visual effects for feature films such as Mortal Kombat, Scary Movie, and Spiderman 2. TDRL consistently expands the boundaries of creativity and technology with its animation and 3D theatrical releases. George Johnsen, Chief Technology/Animation officer of TDRL knows that having the latest technology; the best tools and the ability to manage assets efficiently are key to bringing projects in on time and on budget. As a result he has standardized on the high performance
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 by PNY
graphic board and is currently evaluating the latest
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5500 by PNY.
To achieve a more efficient method of production on its latest project, Food Fight! a full length animated film, Johnsen developed a new camera-based motion capture system. Ten mega pixel cameras at 110 frames per second search out the travel paths of fiber optic sensors located on suits worn by live performers. As soon as the movements of these performers are captured through the sensors, they are directly converted into 3D files, in real-time, creating a real-time observation system. According to Johnsen: “The coolest moment in our whole motion capture experience was the day that my director did not look at the actors at all, but directed the cartoons being projected on the wall. To achieve this we needed a really fast, very facile graphics board that could handle the high speed, one with really good open-GL implementation – the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 by PNY graphic board delivers that.”
Food Fight!, distributed by Lions Gate Films is scheduled to be released in the Fall of 2007.
