NVIDIA debuts Tesla™ GPU server at the SuperComputing Conference (SC07)

Over 9,000 attendees from universities, industry and government agencies converged at SC07, in Reno, to see the latest in high performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis. NVIDIA® and industry partners took this opportunity to showcase NVIDIA’s cutting edge graphics solutions including the revolutionary new NVIDIA Tesla GPU Computing Solutions.

Visitors to the NVIDIA booth were rewarded with stunning 3D visualizations of simulated complex molecular systems, seismic data and simulated neural growth created with industry leading HPC applications using the incredible processing power of a Tesla S870 GPU Computing server. This was the first time scientists and engineers could actually witness the computation power of this 12 node cluster including four Tesla S870s (16GPUs) hooked up to eight HP DL140 servers.

The processing power of the Tesla C870 GPU was also demonstrated using sophisticated data-intensive financial applications, along with additional demonstrations on SUN workstations using the Tesla D870 Deskside System.

UIUC with NVIDIA GPU computing solutions advances simulation of complex molecular systems

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s (UIUC) Nanoscale Molecular Dynamics (NAMD) and Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) are powerful and widely used tools for simulating and visualizing biomolecular processes. Simulating complex molecular systems is time consuming and requires large, sophisticated clusters of computers.

To boost performance, the UIUC researchers ported the “cionize” ion placement tool to an NVIDIA GPU computing solution. In doing so, UIUC researchers achieved speedups on ion simulations over 100 times that of an 18-CPU cluster (based on total CPU time vs total GPU time). This remarkable performance allows any bioscience researcher to have the equivalent of a computing cluster on their workstation.

The combination of NAMD and NVIDIA computing solutions is a marriage of cutting edge research and software development, aimed at harnessing the nation’s fastest supercomputers to decipher the tiniest components of living cells. These new computing tools are quickening the pace of drug discovery and other vital research in unraveling biological processes.
